Hero

Hero is a roleplaying game about a group of adventurers braving the haunted and forgotten places of the world. The game tells the story of the adventurers' drive to seek ever greater glory in a bid to become legend.

Hero softens the “play to win, play to lose” approach of Trophy Gold with slight, mechanical shifts embodied in the renamed mechanics that seem to function the same at first, but carry important differences: Spells replace Rituals, which are not inherently dangerous (adding a dark die is always a choice when using Spells), and the characters’ Hoards have been replaced with personal Renown, a high score of sorts that helps to track how much an adventurer has done in the world. The inclusion of Renown necessitated another change that lessens the lethality of the game: there are no Burdens.

The world isn’t out to get the adventurers—it isn’t a natural antagonist—but the adventurers will still need to think on their feet to, indeed, become legend.
